Marketing team planning around a whiteboard

Customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews which clinic, salon or coaching centre to pick, and most business owners have no idea whether those answers send anyone their way. This guide shows how to track AI search traffic with free tools you probably already have: Google Analytics 4, Search Console and your Google Business Profile, plus a simple monthly check for the mentions no tool can count.

You will not get one perfect number. AI tools send visitors through different routes, and some of those routes are not labelled at all. But with an hour of setup you can see most of what is measurable and stop guessing about the rest.

What counts as AI search traffic, and what you can actually see

"AI search traffic" covers several different things. Each one shows up in a different place, and some do not show up anywhere.

Where the customer saw you Where it shows up Can you separate it?
A link in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and similar assistants Google Analytics 4, in the AI Assistant channel Yes, for recognised assistants
A link in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode Search Console, inside normal Web search data No, it is mixed with regular search
Your Business Profile, reached through any Google surface Business Profile performance (calls, directions, website clicks) No AI breakdown
An AI answer that names you but gives no link Nowhere Only by checking answers yourself

Keep this table in mind. A lot of confusion comes from expecting one report to show all four rows.

How to track AI search traffic in Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics 4 now has a built-in channel for this. Google's default channel group definitions describe AI Assistant as the channel by which users arrive "from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek". When the referrer matches a recognised AI assistant, GA4 sets the medium to "ai-assistant" and the campaign to "(ai-assistant)". Google added this channel in May 2026, according to the Analytics release notes.

Two points matter for a local business:

  • The AI Assistant channel does not include Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. Clicks from those count as Google search traffic.
  • The release notes do not say the new channel was applied to older data, so visits from before it launched may still sit under Referral.

Steps to find your AI visits

  1. Open GA4 and go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition.
  2. Make sure the table is grouped by the default channel group. Look for the AI Assistant row.
  3. Change the dimension to Session source / medium to see which assistants sent visits, for example chatgpt.com or gemini.google.com.
  4. Add Landing page as a secondary dimension. This tells you which pages AI tools link to. For a dental clinic in Indiranagar, it might be the root canal page rather than the home page.
  5. Compare the AI Assistant row with Organic Search for engagement and key events such as form submissions or WhatsApp clicks, if you track those.

When to build a custom channel group

If you see AI tools in your Referral report that GA4 does not yet recognise, you can create your own channel group. Google's custom channel group guide gives the path: Admin > Data display > Channel groups > Create new channel group. A few rules from that page:

  • You need the Editor role or above on the property.
  • A standard property can have 2 custom channel groups in addition to the default one, with up to 50 channels each.
  • Traffic goes to the first channel it matches, so place your AI channel above Referral using Reorder.
  • Custom channel groups can be applied to your reports retroactively, which helps you look back at older AI visits.

A simple approach: copy the default group, add a channel called "AI tools" with a condition on Session source that matches the AI domains you actually see in your referral data, move it above Referral, and save.

Why AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks don't appear separately

Many owners look for an "AI Overviews" report in Search Console and cannot find one. Google's AI features page for site owners says sites appearing in AI features are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, reported in the Performance report within the "Web" search type.

Google's Performance report help explains how they are counted:

  • AI Overviews: a click on a link to an external page counts as a click, and the whole AI Overview occupies a single position in the results, so every link inside it shares that position.
  • AI Mode: a click on a link to an external page counts as a click, position follows the same method as a normal results page, and a follow-up question is treated as a new query.
  • Data from Search Labs experiments is not included.

So you cannot isolate AI Overview clicks, but you can still use Search Console well:

  1. Filter the Performance report by queries that sound like questions, such as "which is the best physiotherapy clinic in Baner" or "how much does laser hair removal cost in Gurgaon". In our experience, longer question-style queries are a good place to start when you look for AI answers.
  2. Watch for pages whose impressions rise while clicks stay flat. That pattern can have many causes, so treat it as a prompt to look at the live results for those queries yourself.
  3. Check that your important pages are indexed. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google also says no special schema.org structured data is required.

Track the calls and directions that never reach your website

For most local businesses, the money is not in website visits. It is in calls, direction requests and WhatsApp messages. Someone who reads an AI answer and then opens your Business Profile may never visit your site.

Your Business Profile performance screen shows these actions. Google's performance help page lists calls, messages, bookings, directions, website clicks, searches and views. A few details from that page that change how you read the numbers:

  • Performance data is available only for verified profiles.
  • The Searches metric updates at the start of each month and can take up to 5 days to appear.
  • Views count unique viewers per day, so the number can be lower than the views in your notification emails.

The page does not break any of these down by AI Overviews or AI Mode, so do not expect an AI label here.

Bring profile actions into GA4

Since June 2026 you can link Google Analytics properties to Business Profiles from the GA4 Admin panel, according to the release notes. Once linked, a Google Business Profiles report collection appears in Reports, with interactions, calls, bookings, directions, website clicks, messages and menus. The data covers a rolling 6-month window, so export it monthly if you want a longer history.

A common extra step is to add UTM tags to the website link on your profile (for example ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp). That way visits from the profile are easier to separate from your other Google traffic in GA4. If you run many branches, give each branch its own campaign value so you can compare them, and keep the scheme consistent across every location you manage centrally.

Check AI answers by hand: a simple monthly prompt log

No analytics tool sees an AI answer that names your business without a link. A customer in Andheri asks ChatGPT for "a good pediatric dentist near Lokhandwala", sees your clinic's name, and calls you after finding you on Maps. That visit never touches the AI Assistant channel.

The practical fix is a short, repeatable log. Here is how to set one up:

  1. Write 10 to 15 prompts a real customer would type. Mix generic ("best gym in HSR Layout"), specific ("gym with a steam room near HSR Layout") and comparison prompts ("which gym in HSR Layout is better for weight training, a chain or an independent one").
  2. Run them in the same tools each month: ChatGPT, Gemini and a Google search where an AI Overview appears.
  3. Record the same fields every time so months can be compared.
Date Tool Prompt Were you named? Position in the list Competitors named Anything wrong?
1 Nov ChatGPT best gym in HSR Layout Yes 3rd of 5 Two nearby chains Old opening hours

The last column matters most. If an AI answer gives the wrong hours, an old phone number or a closed branch, fix the source: your Business Profile, website and directory listings. Answers vary from one run to the next, so look at patterns over a few months rather than one result.

Doing this by hand across many locations and keywords gets slow. That is where a tool that tracks AI mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews saves time, but the spreadsheet version works fine for a single outlet.

Make sure you are not blocking the visits you want to count

Before trusting a zero in your reports, check that AI tools can reach your site at all.

  • ChatGPT search: OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Blocking GPTBot is a separate choice about whether content may be used for training models.
  • Google: Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control for access, and points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex if you want to limit what appears. A noindex or nosnippet left on an important page by mistake will keep it out of AI features.

Ask your developer to check your robots.txt file and the meta tags on your main service and location pages once a quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see exactly how many customers came from AI Overviews?

No. Google's help pages say AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted within the standard Web search data in Search Console, and GA4's AI Assistant channel excludes them. You can see the queries and pages, but not an AI-only total.

Why does ChatGPT traffic show as Referral in older GA4 data?

The AI Assistant channel was added to GA4 in May 2026 and the release notes do not say it applies to earlier data. A custom channel group can be applied to reports retroactively, so you can build one to group older AI visits.

Is AI search traffic worth tracking for a small business?

Yes, if only to catch mistakes. The monthly prompt log takes about an hour, and it is one of the few ways to spot wrong hours or old addresses in AI answers before they cost you calls.

Does adding schema markup make AI tools send more traffic?

Google says no special structured data is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that structured data should match the visible text on your page. It can still help search engines understand your page, but it is not a switch for AI traffic.

Putting it together

Set up four things this week: check the AI Assistant channel in GA4, read Search Console for question-style queries, link your Business Profile to GA4, and start a monthly prompt log. Then review all four on the first working day of each month, next to your calls, directions and clicks reports. You will not have a perfect AI number, but you will know which AI tools mention you, which pages they send people to, and what they get wrong.
