If you fix ACs, control pests, repair phones at the doorstep or run a home cleaning service, customers never come to your address. That changes how your Google profile should be set up. This guide explains how a service area business on Google Business Profile works: when to hide your address, how to choose your service areas, what to do if you also have a shop, and the mistakes that get profiles of home-based businesses in India into trouble.

Every rule below comes from Google's own help pages, which are linked so you can check them yourself.

What is a service area business on Google Business Profile?

Google defines a service-area business as one that "visits or delivers to customers directly but doesn't serve customers at their business address". Its own examples are cleaning services and plumbers. In India, think of:

  • An AC repair technician in Pune who works out of a flat in Baner
  • A pest control company in Gurgaon that sends teams to homes and offices
  • A packers and movers firm with a small back office that customers never visit
  • A home tutor or yoga instructor who only teaches at students' homes

Google also describes a second type, the hybrid business: one that serves customers at its address and also visits or delivers to them. A dine-in biryani restaurant in Hyderabad that also delivers is Google's kind of example. So is a car service centre in Andheri that offers doorstep pickup, or a salon in Koramangala that also does bridal makeup at the customer's home.

The third type is a plain storefront: customers come to you, and you do not go to them.

Your business Show address? Add service areas?
Storefront only (clinic, retail shop) Yes No
Hybrid (restaurant that delivers, salon with home visits) Yes Yes
Service area business (plumber, pest control, home tutor) No, hide it Yes

Should you hide your address on Google Business Profile?

Google's answer is direct. Its help page on managing service areas says: "If you don't serve customers at your business address, remove your address from your Business Profile." The sign-up help page goes further: "If your business doesn't have a storefront where you receive customers, you must hide your business address."

So the test is simple: do customers come to this address during your stated hours, and is someone there to receive them? If not, hide the address.

Hiding it from customers does not mean you skip it entirely. You still enter a real address for Google, but it does not appear on your public profile. Your profile shows your service area instead.

A few address rules from Google's guidelines for representing your business that matter for home-based businesses:

  • No P.O. boxes or remote mailboxes. Google prohibits them.
  • No virtual offices. If you rent a mailing address but do not work from it, it does not qualify.
  • Co-working spaces only count in some cases. The office needs clear signage, must receive customers during business hours, and must be staffed during those hours.
  • One profile for the whole area. Google says service-area businesses "can only have one profile for the whole area that they serve." You cannot create separate profiles for Baner, Kothrud and Hinjewadi if you work from one base.
  • Age-restricted products need a storefront. Businesses selling things like alcohol or weapons cannot be service-area only.

How to set up a service area business on Google Business Profile

If you are creating a new profile, Google's sign-up flow asks whether you have a customer-facing storefront. Answer honestly, then add your service areas when prompted.

If you already have a profile with your home address showing, here is how to change it, following Google's help page on service areas:

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages the profile and open your Business Profile (search for your business name on Google or open it in Google Maps).
  2. Select Edit profile, then Location.
  3. Find Show business address to customers and turn it off if customers do not visit you.
  4. In the Service area field, type the areas you serve and pick them from the suggestions.
  5. Save.

Google notes that approved service area edits "may take up to 48 hours" to show on your profile, so do not keep editing if you do not see the change straight away.

Verification for service-area businesses

Once your details are in, Google asks you to verify the business. Google decides which methods you get. Its verification page says methods "are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed", and depend on things like business type, public information, region and business hours. Options include phone or SMS, email, live video call, postcard and video recording. Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days.

Video recording is common for home-based businesses. Google's video verification page says the video must be one unedited recording of at least 30 seconds, recorded and uploaded from a mobile device through your Business Profile. For a service-area business, it asks you to show:

  • Where you operate: street signs, nearby landmarks or other identifiers at your business address
  • Your tools of the trade: professional tools, equipment or products you use for work (for an AC technician, the gas cylinders, gauges and branded van if you have one)
  • Proof you manage the business: business documents such as a business permit, invoice or utility bill

The video must not show bank account, tax or ID numbers, private information, or other people's faces. Before you record, cover the GSTIN or PAN on any invoice you plan to show.

How to choose your service areas

This is where most home-service businesses get it wrong. They either add the whole state or pick the biggest cities they can think of.

Google's limits:

  • Up to 20 service areas.
  • Areas, not a radius. You set areas by city, postal code (your PIN code) or another type of area, not "10 km around me".
  • About 2 hours of driving time. Google says your overall area "shouldn't be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based", with exceptions for some businesses.

A practical way to pick:

  1. Start from your jobs, not your ambitions. List the localities where your last 50 bookings came from. For a pest control firm in Gurgaon, that might be DLF phases, Sohna Road, Golf Course Road and parts of South Delhi.
  2. Match how customers search. People in big Indian cities search by locality ("AC repair Wakad"), so locality or PIN code areas usually fit better than a whole city.
  3. Stay within reach. If you would turn down a job in an area because of travel time, do not list it.
  4. Review every few months. Remove areas you stopped serving and add new ones as your team grows.

Does adding a service area help you rank there?

Google's page on local ranking says results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. It does not say that listing a service area makes you rank in that area.

In our experience, a service area tells customers where you work, but it does not override distance. A plumber based in Baner will usually find it much harder to appear for searches made in Hadapsar, even with Hadapsar listed. That is normal, not a sign that something is broken. The way to see this is to check your rank from many points around your base rather than one, which is what a geo-grid rank tracker shows street by street.

Hybrid businesses: show the address and add areas

If customers visit your premises and you also go to them, keep your address visible and add service areas too. Google allows this, with one condition from its guidelines: the location "should be staffed by your team and able to receive customers during its stated hours."

Some hybrid examples:

  • A clinic in Indiranagar that also offers home sample collection
  • A mobile repair shop in Lajpat Nagar that does doorstep pickups
  • A bakery in Bandra that takes walk-in customers and delivers cakes across the western suburbs

For hybrid businesses, Google says you can show your storefront address, set hours for when staff are available, and also have a service area. Keep the hours honest. If your counter closes at 9 pm but delivery runs till 11 pm, list the hours when someone can actually receive customers at the counter.

Common mistakes that cause problems

These are the patterns we see most often with home-based and service businesses in India. Each one goes against something in Google's guidelines.

Showing a home address customers never visit. Google says you must hide it. Leaving it visible also sends customers knocking on your residential door.

Creating one profile per locality. Google allows one profile for the whole service area, and its sign-up page warns that your account may be suspended if Google finds multiple profiles for the same business in the same metropolitan area.

Stuffing the business name. "Sharma AC Repair Service Baner Wakad Hinjewadi" breaks Google's name rules. Your name must reflect your real-world name as used on your signboard, website and stationery, and must not include service or location information. If you are "Sharma Cooling Services", use exactly that.

Using a virtual office or a friend's shop address. If no one from your team works there and receives customers, it does not qualify.

Listing service areas you cannot cover. Adding all of Maharashtra breaks the roughly 2-hour guideline and attracts leads you will have to refuse.

If you are not sure whether your profile has any of these issues, a Business Profile audit will flag missing or risky settings. And if someone else suggests edits to your profile, such as adding back an address you hid, profile protection alerts help you catch the change early.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a Google Business Profile without an address?

You cannot skip the address entirely, because Google needs a real location to verify you. But you can hide it from customers so that only your service area shows. Google says you must hide it if you do not receive customers there.

How many service areas can I add on Google Business Profile?

Up to 20. Google also says your overall area should not extend beyond about 2 hours of driving time from your base.

Can I run my business from home and still have a Google Business Profile?

Yes. Home-based businesses that travel to customers are what the service-area setup exists for. Hide your home address, add the areas you serve and verify with the method Google offers you.

Can I add a radius like "15 km around Koramangala"?

No. Google asks you to set service areas by city, postal code or another type of area. Pick the localities or PIN codes that cover that radius instead.

Getting it right this week

Ask yourself one question: do customers come to my address? If not, hide it, add up to 20 real localities you serve within a couple of hours of your base, and keep your business name exactly as it appears on your invoices and van. If they do, and you also go to them, keep the address, add service areas and list the hours your counter is staffed. Then measure where you actually show up across your area, not just from your own street.
